Changing Your Master Password

There are two scenarios when you might change your Zoho Vault master password and it's important to remember the below points before doing so. The situations are when you:

  • Remember your master password but would like to reset it
  • Forget your master password


Resetting a known master password 

  1. Click on Change master password from the Security section of the Settings tab.
  2. Enter your current master password and agree to the terms and conditions.
  3. Click Change master password to access Zoho Vault with your new master password.


Note: Zoho Vault decrypts all your data while changing your master password, and encrypt them again with the new one. If you have a large amount of data in your vault, this action will take a few minutes to complete.


Resetting a forgotten master password

Zoho Vault encrypts all your data with your master password, which means we do not store it anywhere on our servers. If you forget your master password, we'll be unable to recover it for you. When you reset it, you'll lose access to all your personal passwords. To reset your master password:

  1. Click Forgot password from the authentication screen.
  2. Enter your Zoho account password for validation
  3. When you reset a forgotten master password, you lose access to all your personal passwords. Click Reset for confirmation to proceed. 
  4. Enter your new master password, then agree to the terms and conditions
  5. Click Reset to set a new password. An encrypted copy of all your passwords will be sent to your registered email address. Whenever you recollect your old master password, you can access all your passwords with it.   


Note: Enterprise passwords are not affected by the master password reset. Soon after an admin logs into their Zoho Vault account, you will be able to access your enterprise passwords after resetting your master password.
