Common Q and A

While working with custom layouts and fields, you may have a few queries. This article will help you find your way back. To understand the basics, please visit the General information on Custom Layouts and Fields and the Business Scenario  guides which can help you create one for your team. 

1. Who can create custom layouts and fields in a team?

Only the Team Owner Admin, and Manager can create custom layouts and add fields. Members will not be able to add layouts or fields. 

2. Does custom layouts and fields cater to all the plans?  

No, this feature is available only in the Enterprise plan . However, if you are using a trial, you can use this feature for 15 days. Once the trial ends, you can upgrade to the enterprise plan and access this feature. 

3. I created a custom layout with the relevant sections and fields, can I use the existing fields in a different layout since it serves the same purpose?

Yes, you can reuse the similar set of fields to a new layout. Every layout will have a column called 'Unused Fields'. You can click on that column to track all the existing fields that are used in other layouts. If you find a field that fits the new layout you can just drag and drop the field. It will carry all the values in it and you can modify them if you wish to. 

4. Can I modify the standard layout?  

No, you cannot modify the standard layout and the default fields in it. By default, all the projects are associated with the standard layout. 

5. Can I delete the default fields in a custom layout?  

No, you cannot edit or delete the default fields in a custom layout. You can drag and drop the default fields to your new section. Users can just rearrange the default fields across the sections in the layout. 

6. Will there be any data loss if I downgrade my plan?  

Once you downgrade your plan, we will hide all the newly added fields and layouts in your team. There will not be any data loss. However, you can upgrade your plan anytime and retrieve the layouts and fields. This applies to the trial period as well. 

7. Can I delete a section from a layout?  

Yes, you can delete a section from a layout by moving the existing fields to a new section. You can also delete an empty section from the layout. 

8. What happens when I reassociate a project to a new layout?  

The project will be overwritten with the new layout. All the existing sections and fields which were associated with the old layout will not be visible in the project. You will get to see only the new layout's sections and fields. 

9. What happens when I modify the custom fields of the layout associated to a project?  

If you modify the details of the custom fields  in a layout it will get reflected in the work item creation form. You can view the changes in the respective projects that are associated with the layout. 

10. Can I associate a project template to a layout?  

Yes, you can associate a template to a layout either while creating the template or associating a layout to a project. Choose the Item Layout while creating a project template. Click Associate and choose the template to associate it with your layout.  

11. Difference between used and unused values inside a custom field?  

Used values are the values that you have defined in the existing field. Unused values are the values that are not used in the current field but are available in other fields across the layouts.
